Is the FlexShares Morningstar US Market Factor Tilt ETF (TILT) a strong ETF right now?

LLaunched on 9/16/2011, the FlexShares Morningstar US Market Factor Tilt ETF (TILT) is a smart beta exchange-traded index fund offering broad exposure to the Style Box – All Cap Blend category of the market.

What are Smart Beta ETFs?

Market-cap-weighted index products, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.

Market-cap-weighted indices are ideal for investors who believe in market efficiency. They offer an inexpensive, convenient and transparent way to replicate market returns.

If you’re the kind of investor who prefers to try and beat the market through good stock selection, then smart beta funds are your best bet; this fund category is known to follow non-cap-weighted strategies.

These indices attempt to select stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance, based on certain fundamental characteristics or a combination of these characteristics.

This area offers many different investment choices, such as the simplest equal weighting, fundamental weighting, and volatility/momentum based weighting methodologies; however, not all of these strategies can yield superior results.

Fund Sponsor and Index

TILT is managed by Flexshares, and this fund has raised over $1.45 billion, making it one of the largest ETFs in the Style Box – All Cap Blend. Before fees and expenses, this particular fund seeks to match the performance of the Morningstar US Market Factor Tilt Index.

The Morningstar US Market Factor Tilt Index measures the performance of US equity markets with increased exposure to small cap and value stocks.

The fund has a 12-month dividend yield of 1.39%.
